……BY BILLY SUTER……

AFTER wowing audiences in Westville and Umbilo, Rock Across America, a hugely enjoyable new show by top Durban tribute band, The Reals, has scheduled a final performance at 7.30pm on Saturday, July 19, at Northlands Bowling Club. And book fast, as the show sold out at Umbilo’s Rhumbelow Theatre this past weekend.

Even better news is that SoSuterBill has two tickets to give away to this show, which is well worth seeing if classic rock is your scene. See competition entry details at the end of this post.

Headed by ace lead guitarist Barry Thomson – whose musicanship and vocal versatility are of particular note here – the show also features Dawn Selby on keyboards and musical direction, drummer Mali Sewell and guest guitarist Shaun Dragt.

Completing the line-up is bassist Robz Miller, who gets to make her vocal debut with The Reals, doing a good job of Eagles’ Life in the Fast Lane, John Cougar Mellencamp’s Hurts So Good and the chugging Doobie Brothers goodie, Long Train Running. In fact, everyone on stage takes a lead vocal during this pacy, few-frills show which allows the music to speak for itself.

The songsheet offers both popular and lesser-known tracks, embracing everyone from Bruce Springsteen, Bob Segar, Bread and Bruce Hornsby, to Steve Miller Band, Little Feat, America, CSNY, Creedence, Grand Funk and Tom Petty.

A surprise highlight has an 11-year-old guest drummer – the very talented Abhi Sewraj from Pietermaritzburg – arriving to join the group for a blistering and crowd-pleasing delivery of Gimme Three Steps, a song from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s debut album.

A big audience-pleaser, this show includes favourites such as Horse with No Name, Sweet Hitchhiker, We’re an American Band, China Grove, Glory Days and Listen to the Music. It’ll get you in high spirits quickly.

Take along some eats, but note that drinks must be bought at the theatre pub. Cheers!

Tickets for the Durban North show cost R200 each. To book visit Webtickets, email roland@stansell.co.za or call Roland at 082 499 8636.
