THE delightfully tongue-in-cheek musical about a man-eating plant, Little Shop of Horrors, will be staged by Michaelouse in Balgowan, in the school’s Schlesinger Theatre, at 7pm on August 29, 30 and 31, and 2pm on Sunday, September 1.
One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows, Little Shop of Horrors is produced by Michaelhouse with St John’s DSG. The production follows the Upstagers’ The Crucible, which ran to great success at the Schlesinger Theatre in July.
Little Shop of Horrors features direction by the school’s theatre director, William Le Cordeur, and music direction by Abri Venter. The colourful plant puppets used in the production are those designed by Greg King for the professional production staged in Durban some years ago by KickstArt.
The Michaelhouse production will feature a professional live orchestra, lead actors played by Drakensberg Boys’ Choir old boys, and a large professional technical team.
Little Shop of Horrors features a book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, the team that created the music and songs for Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast and Aladdin.
The show tells of meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn, who stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his co-worker crush.
This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it… blood. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out-of-this-world origins, and intent towards global
The local production, based on the film by Roger Corman and featuring a screenplay by Charles Griffith, is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) through Dalro.
