A DURBAN season at the Playhouse is scheduled for the latest stage musical by pupils of Johannesburg’s Northcliff High School, which for 21 years has annually toured a musical to Durban as a way of introducing pupils to a professional theatre environment.
This year’s production is the popular High School Musical which, following a season from May 12 to 18 at the Gauteng school, will be staged at Durban’s Playhouse Drama theatre from June 18 to 23.
High School Musical marks the 37th production from the school, all of them created by producer-director Nick Jourdan. Twenty-one of these productions have toured to Durban’s Playhouse over as many years – shows including The Addams Family, Spamalot, The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, Guys and Dolls, Me and My Girl and last year’s hit, Sister Act.
Northcliff High School has long been noted for its high standard of productions, and the good news is that ticket prices for High School Musical are only R60 each for opening night (June 18) and R80 each on June 19. Thereafter they cost R115 each. Also note that R115 tickets will sell for only R90 for pensioners.
Tickets are now available at Computicket (www.computicket.co.za)

Performances have been scheduled for 7.30 nightly from Tuesday to Friday, June 18 to 22, with additional shows at 2pm on the Saturday and the final performance at 3pm on the Sunday (June 23).
High School Musical is the stage production of Disney’s hit film of the same name, which starred Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. It is a fun, teenage love story centred on basketball “jock” Troy Bolton and “brainiac” Gabriella Montez, who meet on vacation at a ski resort while singing in a karaoke competition.
When the two end up at the same high school, they must navigate the expectations of their friends, teachers and parents while exploring their love of singing, and each other.
Can they out-perform thespian stalwarts and leads of the drama club, Sharpay and Ryan, to become the stars of their high school’s musical, while not letting everyone down around them?
High School Musical stars Shannon Howard as Gabriella Montez and Joshua Randall as Troy Bolton.
Under the wing of Nick Jourdan, Northcliff High School has helped develop talent such as singer-songwriter Connell Cruise, who recently landed a US record deal; Carmen Pretorius and Samantha Peo, the two leads in the recent international touring production of Chicago; and Jonathan Roxmouth, who currently playing the title role in the touring international production of The Phantom of the Opera.
