Fleur du Cap Theatre Award winners

Paul du Toit, recipient of the Fleur du Cap Award for best lead actor in a musical, for his title role in Hedwig and The Angry Inch.

PIETER-DIRK Uys was the worthy recipient of the award for Lifetime Achievement at the annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards held in Cape Town tonight.

Awards included those for Saul Radomsky for Best Set Design for Clybourne Park. Also nominated was Durban’s Greg King, for Sweeney Todd.

Best Costume Design went to Niall Griffin, for Joseph.

Jonathan Roxmouth deservedly took the award for best supporting actor in a musical, for his Pharoah in Joseph, but his title character in Sweeney Todd lost to Paul du Toit’s title character in Hedwig and the Angry Inch for best lead actor in a musical.

Taryn Sudding’s secretary, Grace, in Annie, received the award for supporting actress in a musical.

Durban’s Charon Williams-Ros – nominated for roles in both Annie and Sweeney Todd – lost the award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical to Genna Galloway, for Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

The award for Best New South African Script went to Mongiwekhaya for I See You.

Pieter-Dirk Uys, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award.

Andrew Buckland took the award for best lead actor in a play, for The Inconvenience of Wings; and Jennifer Steyn took the best lead actress award for the same play. The award for best director went to Lara Foot for the same production.

The lighting design award went to Faheem Bardien for Ityala Lamawele and the award for Innovation in Theatre went to Makukhanye Art Room.

Best Soundscape, Original Music Composition or Original Score was awarded to David Kramer for District Six Kanala.

Best Performance in a Revue, Cabaret or One-Person Show went to Marlo Minnaar for Santa Gamka.

Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Play went to Rob van Vuuren for A Doll’s House, while Anthea Thompson took the award for best supporting actress in a play.

The winner of the Best New Director award was Mbongeni Mtshali.
