ON THIS DAY IN 2023:
On this day in 2003, actor Taye Diggs (pictured), seen in the films Chicago and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, married Broadway and film actress Idina Menzel (star of Wicked) in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The two, divorced in 2014, met while performing in the stage musical Rent. They have a son, Walker.
Also on this day, The Beatles released their hit, Please Please Me, while this week, in 1970, saw South Africa’s Springbok Radio singles chart topped by The Tremeloes hit (Call Me) Number One, which spent two weeks crowning the chart.
Mary J Blige celebrates her 52nd birthday today, while guitarist Lee Ritenour of Fourplay turns 71 and singer Cody Simpson turns 26. Also of interest is that actress Anita Ekberg passed away on this day in 2015, aged 83.
On this day in 1976, the Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman musical, Pacific Overtures, opened at New York’s Winter Garden Theatre. The show used a Kabuki-like staging and elements of Eastern music, and Harold Prince directed an Asian-American cast, reports Playbill.
Topping the UK singles chart on this day in 1972 was I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing by The New Seekers. The song, which started out as a song in a Coca-Cola ad, spent four weeks at No 1. Just saying…
