Turning 89 today is Gene Hackman,who received five Oscar nominations, winning two – for best actor (The French Connection) and best supporting actor (Unforgiven).

It was on this day in 1931 that the Charlie Chaplin classic, City Lights, premiered in Los Angeles, and on this day in 1933 that the Lone Ranger began a 21-year run on America’s ABC Radio.

This day in 1956 saw Elvis Presley record his hit Blue Suede Shoes, while The Beatles performed their last live gig on this day in 1969 – on the roof of London’s Apple Corp headquarters.
