Oscar-winner Mel Gibson (pictured) celebrates his 67th birthday today and others with candles on cakes include musician Stephen Stills (78) and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones (77).

Also having a birthday today is Victoria Principal, who played Pam Ewing in the original Dallas series. She turns 71.

The musical Mame, which starred Angela Lansbury in the title role, closed on this day in 1970 after some 1 508 performances at New York’s Winter Garden Theatre; and also on this day,  in 1990, the master of musicals, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, then aged 41, divorced singer and former dancer Sarah Brightman, then aged 29, after almost seven years of marriage.

Singer Phil Everly, of The Everly Brothers recording group, died on this day in 2014. He was 74.

On this day in 1976, South Africa’s Springbok Radio chart was topped by the Pussycat hit, Mississippi, which enjoyed eight weeks at No 1. Just saying…
