Singer Billy Ocean (pictured) turns 72 today, while singer Mac Davis is 81 and opera great Placido Domingo turns 82. Emma Bunton, Baby Spice from The Spice Girls, has 47 candles on her cake today and actress Geena Davis turns 67.

On this day in 2011, Theoni V Aldredge, a three-time Tony Award-winning costume designer, died at the age of 88. She won Tony Awards for her costumes for the original Broadway productions off Annie, Barnum and La Cage aux Folles, reports Playbill. She also created iconic costumes for such shows as Dreamgirls, A Chorus Line and 42nd Street. Also of interest is that this day, in 1903, marked the first New York staging of The Wizard of Oz.

This day in 1978 saw the Bee Gees album Saturday Night Fever reach No 1 in the US, a spot it held for 24 weeks, while on this day in 1987 blues musicians Muddy Waters and B B King were inducted into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame.

In the UK, this week in 1991, German group Enigma’s Sadeness Part 1 was topping the singles chart.
