ON THIS DAY IN 2021:

Betty White (pictured), of hit TV series The Golden Girls, would have turned 100 today had she not died on December 31, 2020. Singer Francoise Hardy turns 78 and British singer Paul Young celebrates his 66th birthday. Actress Zoey Deschanel turns 42, Jim Carrey turns 60 and Kid Rock turns 51. Chart-topper Calvin Harris turns 38 and Susannah Hoff, formerly of hit group Bangles, turns 63.

Also on this day, in 2004, Tony Award-nominated producer Ray Stark, 88, died of a heart attack. Stark brought the musical Funny Girl to Broadway, and later to the big screen (his mother-in-law was Fanny Brice).

The Anton Chekhov classic, Cherry Orchard, opened at the Moscow Art Theatre on this day in 1904, and also on this day, in 1982, Bucks Fizz was topping the UK singles chart with Land of Make Believe. It enjoyed two weeks at No 1. Just saying…
