ON THIS DAY IN 2018:

Betty White (pictured) of hit TV series The Golden Girls, turns 96 today, singer Francoise Hardy turns 74 and singer Paul Young celebrates his 62nd birthday. Actress Zoey Deschanel turns 38, Jim Carrey turns 56 and Kid Rock turns 47. Chart-topper Calvin Harris turns 34 and Susannah Hoff, formerly of hit group Bangles, turns 59.

Also on this day, in 2004, Tony Award-nominated producer Ray Stark, 88, died of a heart attack. Stark brought the musical Funny Girl to Broadway, and later to the big screen (his mother-in-law was Fanny Brice).

The Anton Chekhov classic, Cherry Orchard, opened at the Moscow Art Theatre on this day in 1904, and also on this day, in 1982, Bucks Fizz was topping the UK singles chart with Land of Make Believe. It enjoyed two weeks at No 1. Just saying…
