This Day in Showbiz History… January 19

dolly2ON THIS DAY IN 2023:

Dolly Parton (pictured) turns 77 today, The Birds actress Tippi Hedren (mother of Melanie Griffiths) turns 93, actor Shawn Wayans turns 52, and singer Janis Joplin, had she not died in 1970 aged 27, would have turned 80 today.

This day in 1991 saw the 48th Golden Globe Awards presented in Los Angeles, when Dances With Wolves took the award for best picture (drama) and award-winners included Whoopi Goldberg (for Ghost) and Kathy Bates (for Misery). That was also the year that Jack Lemmon took the Cecil B DeMille award for lifetime achievement. Lemmon died of metastatic cancer of the bladder on June 27, 2001.

On the theatre scene, the musical Sweet Charity had its New York premiere on this day in 1966, and on this day in 1971, No, No Nanette opened at the Big Apple’s 46th St Theatre for 861 performances.

This week in 1979 saw the Boney M hit, Mary’s Boy Child, topping South Africa’s Springbok Radio singles chart for a second week. Just saying…
