An important development for musical theatre was marked this day in 1879, when  the Gilbert and Sullivan success, H.M.S. Pinafore, made its American debut in New York, spurring many writers to try their hand at comic operetta.

US singer-songwriter Skrillex turns 34 today, while hit-maker Pitbull (pictured) turns 41 and actor Chad Lowe (brother of Rob) turns 54.

In television history, this day in 1974 saw the sitcom Happy Days premiere in the US on the ABC network. It ran for 11 years. Also, this day in 1977 saw the Coneheads debut on Saturday Night Live; while it was on this day, in 1981, that Hill Street Blues had its US premiere on NBC-TV.

It is also reported that on this day in 1895, the Tchaikovsky ballet, Swan Lake, had its premiere in St Petersburg.

South African band The Dealians reached the top of the Springbok Radio hit-parade with Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow, on this day in 1971. The song spent three weeks at No 1. Just saying…
