Singer-actress Jennifer Hudson (pictured), an Oscar-winner for her supporting role in Dreamgirls, who first found fame as a contestant on American Idol, turns 41 today, while a former American Idol winner, Ruben Studdard, turns 44 today.

On this day in 2022, legendary South African singer, producer and songwriter Dennis East died, aged 73, following a stroke three days earlier. East’s many hits in the 1970s and 1980s included Stone Walls, A Rose Has to Die, A Million Drums and Joey the Lipstick Collector.

Former Olympic diver turned film star, Jason Statham, turns 55 today and Linda Gray, who played Sue-Ellen Ewing in TV’s Dallas, turns 82. Barry White and Paul Walker, both now passed, were also born on this day.

Durban-based guitarist Bruce Boome, formerly of Four Jacks and a Jill, also celebrates his birthday today.

It was on this day in 1959 that the hit western series, Bonanza, premiered on television in the United States, while Anthony Perkins, star of the Alfred Hitchcock classic, Psycho, died on this day in 1992, aged 60.

It was on this day in 1969 that Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival reached the top of the South African singles chart, where it remained for one week. Just saying…
