New Zealand film director Peter Jackson turns 62 today, while Italian film director Federico Fellini died on this day in 1990, aged 73. Another who died on this day in 1993 was actor River Phoenix.

The Barbra Streisand album, People, reached No 1 in America on this day in 1964 – and stayed there for five weeks.

Crowning the South African singles chart on this day in 1986 was Venus by British all-girl group Bananarama, which spent three weeks at No 1. The song first hit No 1 in this country in March 1970, with the original recording by Dutch band Shocking Blue. Just saying…
