This day in 1950 marked the death of American-Lithuanian singer and silent screen star Al Jolson, famous for starring in the first ‘talking picture’, The Jazz Singer, and for the hit songs Mammy and Swanee.

This day in 2010 marked the wedding, in Northern India, of pop star Katy Perry, then 25, and actor-comic Russell Brand, 10 years her senior.
