Transgender star Laverne Cox, of Orange is the New Black fame, also celebrates her birthday today, but websites have her at either 50, 53 or 37. Take your pick.

It was on this day in 1942 that Bing Crosby recorded the classic White Christmas, and on this day in 1949 that the first Baftas (British Film and Television awards) were held, The Best Years of Our Lives taking the statuette for best film.

The Everly Brothers classic, Cathy’s Clown, hit No 1 in the US on this day in 1960, and it was on this day in 2010 that five-time Grammy winner Shania Twain divorced South African-born music producer Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange, after 14 years of marriage.
