Actress Helena Bonham Carter (pictured) turns 56 today, while Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac turns 74, rocker-actor Lenny Kravitz turns 58 and actor James Caan turns 83.

Actor John Wayne was born on this day in 1907. He died, aged 72, in 1979.

Fans of The Beatles are sure to be interested to know that today, in 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono began their second bed-in for peace at Montreal’s Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Also, note that on this day in 1973, The Beatles 1967-1970 album reached No 1.

It was on this day in 1994 that Michael Jackson, then aged 35, married 26-year-old Lisa Marie Presley, the only daughter of the late Elvis Presley, in the Dominican Republic.

On the movie scene, The Pianist, a film by Roman Polanski, took the Palm e d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival on this day in 2002.

On this day in 1972 the bagpipes rendition of Amazing Grace, by The Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, rose to the top of the South African hit-parade, where it stayed for one week. Just saying…
