Among celebs having birthdays today are Mr T of TV’s The A-Team (pictured), who turns 70, and British singer Leo Sayer, who turns 74.

Fats Waller, born in 1904, died on this day in 1943 – a day which, in 1908, marked the Chicago premiere of the first horror film, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Today, in 1980, marked the UK and North American opening of Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, produced by George Lucas.

The hit musical Gypsy first opened on Broadway on this day in 1959.  It enjoyed 702 performances.

The Dawn hit, Knock Three Times, was topping the UK singles chart on this day on 1971, having become the 300th single to do so. The band’s first No 1 in the UK, it spent five weeks crowning the chart. Just saying…
