Actress Amy Adams (pictured) tied the knot in California with longtime love Darren Le Gallo on this day in 2015, while also married on this day, in 2009, were actress Maggie Gyllenhaal (sister of Jake Gyllenhaal) and stage and screen star Peter Sarsgaard.

Birthdays today? Soccer and modelling star David Beckham turns 48, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson turns 51 and singer Engelbert Humperdinck turns 87. Singer Lily Allen turns 38 and Bianca Jagger turns 78.

On this day in 1929, a 14-year-old Billie Holiday and her mother were reportedly arrested for prostitution following a raid of a brothel in Harlem, while this day in 1936 marked the premiere in Moscow of the Sergei Prokofiev musical, Peter and the Wolf.

Also on this day, in 1938, Ella Fitzgerald recorded A-Tisket, A-Tasket.

On Broadway, this day in 2001 marked a revival of the musical 42nd Street on the revitalised 42nd Street (at the Ford Centre). It went on to take the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, reports Playbill.

On this day in 1969, Sorry Suzanne by The Hollies rose to the top of the South African Springbok Radio singles chart, where it remained for two weeks. It was the band’s first No 1 hit in South Africa. Just saying…
