This day is also of note for country legend Dolly Parton having wed Carl Dean in Georgia in 1966. She was 20 and he was 23.

Deaths on his day? A heart-throb star of western movies, Audie Murphy, also a highly decorated US World War 2 hero, died in a plane crash in 1971, aged 46. Also, Claude Rains, star of The Invisible Man, died on this day in 1967, aged 77.
