Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell (pictured) turns 37 today, film director David Cronenberg turns 80 and actor-comic Billy Crystal turns 75.

Actor Michael Caine and musician Quincy Jones have something in common today – both have 90 candles on their birthday cake!

It was on this day in 1971 that The Rolling Stones left England for France to escape taxes, while on this day in 1885, the Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera, Mikado, premiered in London, at the Savoy Theatre.

This day in 2002 saw a musical version of Sweet Smell of Success open on Broadway. Playbill reports that in spite of a good cast including John Lithgow and Brian d’Arey James, and a creative team led by Marvin Hamlisch, the musical adaptation of the tale of a crooked columnist and a sleazy press agent had bad reviews and ran for only 109 performances.
