Academy Award-winner Liza Minnelli (pictured here as Sally Bowles in a scene from the 1972 Bob Fosse hit, Cabaret) turns 75 today, while actor Aaron Eckhart turns 53 and singer-songwriter James Taylor turns 73.

British singer Pete Doherty, frontman with The Libertines, turns 42 today while Law and Order actor Courtney B Vance turns 61 and Iron Maiden member Steve Harris turns 65.

On this day in 1987, the acclaimed musical Les Miserables opened on Broadway, with Colm Wilkinson and Terrence Mann in the lead roles of arch rivals. The production ran for  6 680 performances, and for a time became the second longest-running show in Broadway history,  reports Playbill.

On this day in 1970, Venus by Shocking Blue was enjoying the first of its three weeks atop South Africa’s Springbok Radio chart. Just saying…
