It was on this day in 1979 that the glorious Stephen Sondheim classic, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, opened on Broadway, starring Angela Lansbury (pictured) and Len Cariou. The show swept the Tony Awards, taking prizes for best musical, lead actor and lead actress, director (Harold Prince), book, score and also scenic and costume design, reports Playbill.

Birthdays today? Pop star Justin Bieber turns 26, pop star Kesha turns 33, director Ron Howard turns 66, TV actor Alan Thicke (father of singer Robin Thicke) turns 72 and Dirk Benedict (of TV’s The A-Team) turns 75.

Roger Daltrey of hit band The Who turns 76 today, singer Harry Belafonte (of Banana Boat Song fame) turns 93 and actor Javier Bardem turns 52.

On this day in 1980, Babe by the band Styx rose to the top of South Africa’s Springbok Radio Top 20, where it spent one week. Just saying…
