South African music legend Johnny Clegg  (pictured), who died of pancreatic cancer in July 2019, would have turned 70 today, and today would also have marked the 65th birthday of Prince, who died on April 21 2016.

Singer Tom Jones turns 83 today, Budapest singer George Ezra turns 30 and singer Iggy Azalea turns 33. Dave Navarro, former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, turns 56.

Actor Liam Neeson turns 71 today, actor Karl Urban turns 51 and Bill Hader of Saturday Night Live turns 45.

Aussie actor Mel Gibson married Robyn Moore on this day in 1980. Both were 24 at the time.

It was on this day in 1909 that Mary Pickford made her film debut in the US, going on to become known as America’s Sweetheart, and it was also on this day, in that same year, that the world welcomed great actress Jessica Tandy. Tandy, who died in 1994, went on to create many landmark roles on Broadway, including Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire, Agnes in A Delicate Balance and Fonsia in The Gin Game. She won an Oscar as Best Actress for her title role in Driving Miss Daisy.

Today also marked the day, in 1988, that The Lion King took Broadway’s Tony Award for best musical, beating the anticipated winner, Ragtime.

Solitaire a hit for Andy Williams rose to the top of the South African singles chart on this day in 1974. It spent fours week there. Just saying…
