This Day in Showbiz History… June 2

ON THIS DAY IN 2022:

Zachary Quinto (pictured), who plays Spock in the new Star Trek film franchise, turns 45 today, while actor Stacey Keach turns 81. Dominic Cooper, star of the Mamma Mia film, turns 44; Wayne’s World star Dana Carvey turns 67; and Wentworth Miller, star of TV’s Prison Break, turns 50. Wayne Brady, comedian, also turns 50 today.

Locally, Durban trumpeter Cathy Peacock, a member of the KZNPO and the leader of the hit Platform Jazz band, also celebrates her birthday.

On this day in 2003, reports Playbill, producers pulled the plug on a Broadway-bound revival of Little Shop of Horrors after the musical’s Florida tryout, and the planned August 14 opening cancelled. Virtually the entire cast and production team was replaced, with only leading man Hunter Foster retained. Under new director, Jerry Zaks, the production opened on Broadway four months later, and Foster is the lone person from the production nominated for a Tony Award, adds Playbill.

This Ole House by Shakin’ Stevens was crowning the South African singles chart on this day in 1981. It spent five weeks in the top spot. Just saying…
