This Day in Showbiz History… June 16

ON THIS DAY IN 2022:

On this day in 2007, rocker Rod Stewart (pictured), then aged 62, married model Penny Lancaster, then aged 38, in a medieval abbey at La Cervara.

Roseanne actress Laurie Metcalf turns 67 today while German actor Daniel Bruhl turns 44 and John Cho, perhaps best known for his role in the newer Star Trek films, turns 40.

It was on this day in 1946 that the original Broadway production of Annie Get Your Gun, with Ethel Merman in the title role, opened at the Imperial Theatre, where it enjoyed 1147 performances.

Also of note on Broadway, on this day in 1991, was the closure of a revival of  Fiddler on the Roof, which ran for 241 performances at the Gershwin Theatre. It starred Topol as humble milkman Tevye. Topol was also in the hit film version.

American rocker Suzi Quatro topped the UK chart on this day in 1973 with her first No 1 single, Can the Can, which enjoyed one week at No 1. Subsequent Quatro hits included Devil Gate Drive and She’s In Love With You. Just saying…
