It was on this day in 1978 that the film, Grease, with John Travolta and Olivia Newton John (pictured), opened; and on this day, in 2002, that Paul McCartney, then 59, wed former model Heather Mills, then 34, in Ireland.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Chita Rivera received Lifetime Achievement awards at Broadway’s 72nd Tony Awards ceremony, held on this day in 2018. The Band’s Visit took 10 awards, including Best Musical. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child received six Tonys, including Best Play.

Peter Dinklage, star of TV’s Game of Thrones, turns 53 today, while actor Shia LeBeouf turns 36 and Hugh Laurie, star of TV’s House, turns 63. Actor Gene Wilder, who died in 2016, was born on this day in 1933.

John Wayne died on this day in 1979, aged 72. Another who died on this day, in 2015, was Ron Moody, the British actor who played the scheming London crime lord, Fagin, in both the stage and film versions of the musical Oliver!. He was 91 when he died.

South African playwright Athol Fugard turns 90 today.

On this day in 1971, the Three Dog Night classic, Joy to the Word, rose to the top of the South African singles chart, where it enjoyed a three-week run. Just saying…
