This Day in Showbiz History… February 23

sallyLongtime Durban entertainment writer Sally Scott (pictured), now newly relocated to her home town, London, celebrates her 65th birthday today, as do actresses Emily Blunt (34) and Dakota Fanning (23). Peter Fonda turns 77 today and Josh Gad turns 36.

It was on this day in 1940 that Walt Disney released his animated hit, Pinocchio, while this day in 1965 marked the death, by heart attack,  of screen comic Stan Laurel, the skinny one in the legendary Laurel and Hardy duo. He was 74.

On this day in 1978, the Grammy Awards were hosted by John Denver and the Eagles hit Hotel California took the statuette for Record the Year. Album of the Year was Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. The Song of the Year was the Debbie Boone hit, You Light Up My Life.

The song topping the South African Springbok Radio chart this week in 1979 was Too Much Heaven by the Bee Gees. The brother’s third and final No 1 in South Africa, it spent seven weeks crowning the chart. Just saying…
