John Travolta (pictured) turns 66 today, while Yoko Ono, widow of John Lennon, turns 87 today, rapper-producer Dr Dre turns 55, actor Matt Dillon turns 56 and actress Cybill Shepherd turns 70.

Celebrating her 52nd birthday today is Molly Ringwald (remember her in the ’80s ‘Brat Pack’ youth films Pretty in Pink and 16 Candles?), while actress Greta Scacchi turns 60.

It was on this day in 1979 that the mini-series about slavery, Roots: Next Generation, premiered on US television – and on this day as far back as 1705 that Flora became the first opera to be staged in America, in Charleston.

The song topping the SA Springbok Radio chart this week in 1973 was I Don’t Wanna Play House by Barbara Ray. It spent six weeks at No 1. Just saying…
