travJohn Travolta (pictured) turns 63 today, while Yoko Ono, widow of John Lennon, turns 84 today, rapper-producer Dr Dre turns 52, actor Matt Dillon turns 53 and actress Cybill Shepherd turns 67.

Celebrating her 49th birthday today is Molly Ringwald (remember her in the ’80s ‘Brat Pack’ youth films Pretty in Pink and 16 Candles?), while actress Greta Scacchi turns 57.  Film director Milos Forman, who gave us Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, turns 85.

It was on this day in 1979 that the mini-series about slavery, Roots: Next Generation, premiered on US television – and on this day as far back as 1705 that Flora became the first opera to be staged in America, in Charleston.

The song topping the SA Springbok Radio chart this week in 1973 was I Don’t Wanna Play House by Barbara Ray. It spent six weeks at No 1. Just saying…
