This Day in Showbiz History… February 14

lisabON THIS DAY IN 2023:

Durban theatre darling Lisa Bobbert (pictured) celebrates her birthday today, and also celebrating birthdays are Durban DJ Liam Magner (of Veranda Panda fame) and David Jenkins of hit duo Qadasi.

Others celebrating birthdays today are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Good Doctor and Bates Motel star Freddie Highmore (31), vocalist Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty (51) and actor Simon Pegg (53). Alan Parker (who died in 2020 aged 77) was also born on this day, in 1944. He directed the films Fame, Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, Evita, Pink Floyd: The Wall and The Commitments.

On this day in 1972, the world welcomed Grease to New York, where it briefly became the longest running show in Broadway history (3 388 performances), followed by a film version that became one of the most successful movies ever. It was the first Broadway musical for songwriters Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey – and their last, reports Playbill.

The song topping the South African Springbok Radio chart this week in 1986 was Nikita by Elton John which spent four weeks at No 1. Just saying…
