Others celebrating birthdays today are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Bates Motel star Freddie Highmore (25 ), vocalist Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty (45), actor Simon Pegg (47) and Alan Parker (73), who directed the films Fame, Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, Evita and The Commitments.

On this day in 1972, the world welcomed Grease to New York, where it briefly became the longest running show in Broadway history (3 388 performances), followed by a film version that became one of the most successful movie ever. It was the first Broadway musical for songwriters Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey – and their last, reports Playbill.

The song topping the South African Springbok Radio chart this week in 1986 was Nikita by Elton John which spent four weeks at No 1. Just saying…
