This Day in Showbiz History… February 10

ON THIS DAY IN 2023:

Hard to believe, but singer Roberta Flack (pictured), who gave us Killing Me Softly and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, turns 86 today (although some maintain she is actually 84…there are many conflicting online entries).

Turning 56 today is actress Laura Dern, who won an Oscar in 2020 for Marriage Story. She is the daughter of actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd.  Locally, award-winning South African actor and playwright Paul Slabolepszy turns 75 today.

On this day in 1999, reports Playbill, a revival of the Arthur Miller play, Death of a Salesman, opened on Broadway, starring Brian Dennehy. The site adds that it was exactly 50 years after the original Broadway debut of the play, starring Lee J Cobb, at the Morosco Theatre.

On this day in 2005, celebrated US playwright Arthur Miller died of cancer. He was 89. Miller’s plays include The Crucible, A View From the Bridge, After the Fall and All My Sons.

On this day in 1984, the Culture Club hit, Karma Chameleon, spent the first of its two weeks at the top of South Africa’s Springbok Radio Top 20. Just saying…
