On the celeb birthday scene, Ryan Seacrest, host of American Idol, turns 43 today, while pop star Ricky Martin (pictured) turns 46, and actor Anil Kapoor turns 58.

In keeping with the festive spirit, it is of note that today, in 1818, the carol Silent Night, composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, was reportedly first sung at St Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, Austria.

It’s also worth noting that, on this day in 1871, the Giusseppi Verdi opera,  Aida, premiered in Cairo.

On this day in 1922, the BBC broadcast its first British radio play, The Truth About Father Christmas, and on this day in 1964, shooting began on The Cage, the pilot for Star Trek.

On this day in 2000, comedy legend Victor Borge died, aged 91.
