ON THIS DAY IN 2022:
On this day in 1988, petite Aussie Kylie Minogue (pictured) topped the South African Springbok Radio Top 20 with her cover of The Locomotion, previously a hit for local band Rabbitt as well as Little Eva and Grand Funk Railroad. Kylie spent 11 weeks at No 1 with that song.
Today marks the birthday of much-missed SA stage and screen star Bill Flynn, who died in July 1987, aged 58. This was also the day the world welcomed artist Vladimir Tretchikoff (1913) and Laurens van der Post (1906)…and, 33 years ago today, award-winning music star Taylor Swift.
Also of interest on this day in showbiz history…the first music store opened in the US in 1759 (in Philadelphia). And on this day in 1961, not only did The Beatles officially sign up Brian Epstein as their manager, but the Jimmy Dean Big Bad John album became country music’s first million-seller. Just saying…
