This Day in Showbiz History…December 11

Oscar-winning actress-dancer Rita Moreno (pictured as Anita in the screen version of West Side Story) turns 86 today, while former teen pop star Brenda Lee turns 73.

Today also marks the death, in 2012, of musician and composer Ravi Shankar (father of recording artist Norah Jones), who was 92. Still talking musicians… on this day in 2010, Good Charlotte lead vocalist Joel Madden (then 31) married fashion designer and actress Nicole Richie (then 30) in Beverly Hills, California.

Playbill reports that on this day in 1983, the Michael Frayn comedy, Noises Off, involving a theatre company touring with a sex farce, opened on Broadway. It starred Dorothy Loudon, Brian Murray and Victor Garber. The show returned to the same theatre in 2001, in a revival teaming Patti LuPone and Peter Gallagher. 

South Africa’s top song this week, in 1987, was La Bamba by Los Lobos, from the film of that name starring Lou Diamond Phillips. The song spent nine weeks at No 1 on the Springbok Radio Top 20. Just saying…
