This Day in Showbiz History… December 9

ON THIS DAY IN 2018:

It was 102 years ago today that actor Kirk Douglas was born, while his birthday is shared by Dame Judi Dench (pictured), who turns 84 today, and former US teen idol Donny Osmond, who turns 61. Former Desperate Housewives hunk Jesse Metcalfe turns 40 today.

Also of note is that today, in 1902, Margaret Hamilton was born. The actress, who died aged 82 in May 1985, is best known as the wicked witch in The Wizard of Oz.

On the theatre scene …on this day in 2009, singer Dolly Parton made her Broadway debut as composer-lyricist of 9 to 5,  at New York’s Marquis Theatre. Based on the film by Patricia Resnick (who also wrote the libretto for the musical), the tale of female office workers’ conflicts with their  chauvinist boss starred Allison Jsnney and Megan Hilty and Stephanie J Block, reports Playbill.

South Africa’s top song this week, in 1975, was Milky Ways by Columbus. Just saying…
