Actress-comic Tracey Ullman (pictured) turns 63 today, while singer Ellie Goulding turns 35, Jay Kay of the band Jamiroquai turns 53, Jeff Lynne of ELO turns 75 and Patti Smith turns 76.

Today, in 1979, marked the death, aged 77, of Richard Rodgers, who collaborated on hit shows including The Sound of Music, Pal Joey, The King And I, Carousel and South Pacific.

On this day in 1948, the Cole Porter hit, Kiss Me Kate, starring Alfred Drake and Patricia Morison, opened on Broadway, while on this day in 2001, a revival of the same musical – along with a revival of The Music Man  – closed after having struggled since the 9/11 attacks cut into attendance, reports Playbill.

The song crowning South Africa’s Springbok Radio singles chart this week in 1987 was Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley, which spent five weeks at number one. Just saying…
