On this day in 1924, a two-and-a-half-year-old Judy Garland, billed as baby Francis, made her showbiz debut, while on this day in 1973, the horror classic, The Exorcist, a film starring Linda Blair, had its premiere – and then went on to become the first horror movie to be nominated for the Oscar for best picture.

Oscar-winner Jared Leto (pictured) turns 46 today, while Game of Thrones star Kit Harington blows out 31 candles and US record producer and songwriter Phil Spector turns 78.

It was on this day in 1831 that Vincenzo Bellini’s opera, Norma, premiered in Milan, while it has been reported that on this day in 1944, the Tennessee Williams play, The Glass Menagerie, was first performed publicly, at the Civic Theatre in Chicago.

Comedian Jack Benny died at the age of 80 on this day in 1974.
