On this day in 1924, a two-and-a-half-year-old Judy Garland, billed as baby Francis, made her showbiz debut.

On this day in 1973, the horror classic, The Exorcist, a film starring Linda Blair, had its premiere – and then went on to become the first horror movie to be nominated for the Oscar for best picture.

Oscar-winner Jared Leto turns 51 today, while Game of Thrones star Kit Harington (pictured) blows out 36 candles. American record producer and songwriter Phil Spector – who died (aged 81) on January 16, 2021 – was born on this day in 1939.

It was on this day in 1831 that Vincenzo Bellini’s opera, Norma, premiered in Milan, while it has been reported that on this day in 1944, the Tennessee Williams play, The Glass Menagerie, was first performed publicly, at the Civic Theatre in Chicago.

Comedian Jack Benny died at the age of 80 on this day in 1974.

The most popular single in South Africa this week in 1985 was The Power of Love by Jennifer Rush, which was enjoying its 10th and final week at number one and emerged as the top-selling single of 1985 in South Africa. Just saying…
