Director and actor Richard Attenborough, who made Ghandi, died on this day in 2014, aged 90.

Marlee Matlin, the only deaf actress to win the Best Actress Oscar – for Children of a Lesser God – was born on this day in 1965, in Illinois. This day also marked the wedding, in 1970, of Peter Sellers and model Miranda Quarry.

On this day in 2008, Playbill reports, Phantom of the Opera closed down on Broadway for four performances so that technicians could update sound design technology on the long-running production.
