Actor Scott Caan turns 45 today while singer-actor Rick Springfield turns 72. Today also marks the birthday of dance great Gene Kelly (pictured), who died, aged 83, in 1996, while River Phoenix was born on this day in 1970. He died, aged 23, in 1993 of a drug overdose

This day in 1946 marked the premiere of the Howard Hawks film, The Big Sleep, teaming Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

It was on this day in 1994 that Jeff Buckley released Grace, his album containing a cover of Hallelujah, penned by Leonard Cohen.

A sad day for the theatre world on this day in 1960 – the death of Oscar Hammerstein II. He was 65 and his hit, The Sound of Music, had only recently opened on Broadway.
