Oscar-winner Shirley MacLaine (pictured) turns 88 today, Oscar-winner Barbra Streisand turns 80 and the first winner of American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, turns 40.

Actor Djimon Hounsou turns 58 and designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, who created the iconic cone-bra look for Madonna, turns 70. Locally, singer-actor Daniel Buys, star of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (South Africa), turns 37.

On this day in 2007, Whitney Houston, then aged 43, divorced R&B singer-songwriter Bobby Brown, then aged 38, after 14 years of marriage. Meanwhile, David Bowie, then 45, married supermodel Iman, then 37, in Switzerland, on this day in 1992.

On this day in 2014, on Broadway, Alan Cumming returned to his role of the seductive Emcee in a revival of the hit musical Cabaret. In 1998, he won a Tony Award for the same role. The revival starred Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles. It was once again directed by Sam Mendes and choreographed by Rob Marshall.
