Singer Bobby Vinton (best known for the hit Blue Velvet) turns 88 today, singer Akon turns 50 and both actor-comedian Martin Lawrence (pictured) and actor Jon Cryer turn 58.

Today also marks the birthday of Charlie Chaplin, who died, aged 88, on Christmas Day in 1977. And it marks the birthday of Spike Milligan, who was born in 1918 and died in 2002.

On this day in 1978, America’s NBC network started broadcasting the acclaimed mini-series, The Holocaust, featuring Meryl Streep and James Woods.

On this day in 2015, a revival of The King and I hit Broadway with Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe in lead roles among a cast of 50. The production took Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and for O’Hara as Best Actress in a Musical.

On this day in 1997, I Believe I Can Fly by R Kelly, from the movie Space Jam, topped the UK singles chart. It remained there for three weeks. Just saying…
