Samantha Peo (pictured), Johannesburg-based actress, singer and television star, celebrates her birthday today, as does Durban TV, film and stage actress Jailoshini Naidoo, star of the cinema hit Keeping Up with the Kandasamys.

Others celebrating birthdays today are singers Al Green (76) and Paebo Bryson (71), and Rocky soundtrack composer Bill Conti (80).

On this day in 1964, Tom Jones took the Best Picture Oscar at the 36th Academy Awards ceremony, where Sidney Poitier took the lead actor statuette for Lilies of the Field, and Patricia Neal took the lead actress award for Hud.

The Beatles recorded their single Help! on this day in 1965, while on this day in 1979, Gloria Gaynor was enjoying her fourth and final week atop the UK singles chart with her disco anthem, I Will Survive. Just saying…
