Joel Grey (pictured), who won an Oscar for his MC in the Bob Fosse film classic, Cabaret, celebrates his 91st birthday today. He is also noted for creating the role of the morally compromised wizard in the stage musical Wicked, and filled the title role in George M on Broadway. He is also the father of Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey.

Rammstein bassist Oliver Reidel turns 52 today, while TV personality Jeremy Clarkson turns 63, actress Stephanie Pratt turns 37 and singer Joss Stone turns 36.

On this day in 1991, Miss Saigon opened on Broadway, with Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce in lead roles. Both went on to win Tony Awards. The musical ran for 4 092 performances.

This day in 1966 saw Frank Sinatra record Strangers in the Night for his album of the same name. The song later reached No 1 on the Billboard charts.

On this day in 1972, Gilbert O’Sullivan was enjoying the first of his two weeks topping the UK charts with Get Down, a song about his dog. It marked his last No 1 hit.

On this day in 1974, Love Hurts by Nazareth reached the top of the South African Springbok Radio chart. It remained there for five weeks. Just saying…
