On This Day in Showbiz History… April 7

Aussie Oscar-winner Russell Crowe (pictured) has a double celebration today – his 58th birthday and the anniversary of his 2003 wedding to singer Danielle Spencer, who is seven years his junior. The wedding was at Crowe’s cattle farm in New South Wales, Australia.

Other birthdays today? Actor Jackie Chan turns 68, musician John Oates turns 73 and director Francis Ford Coppolla turns 83.

On this day in 1970, the Academy Award for best film went to Midnight Cowboy, while John Wayne took the award for best actor for True Grit and Maggie Smith took the best actress award for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

On Broadway, this day in 1949 marked the premiere of the musical South Pacific, which enjoyed 1928 performances at the Majestic Theatre.

On this day in 1972,  Mother and Child Reunion by Paul Simon rose to the top of South Africa’s Springbok Radio chart, where it stayed put for one week. Just saying…
