On this day in 1969, Oliver! , starring Mark Lester (pictured, and who turns 59 on July 11) took the Oscar for Best Picture  – and it wasn’t until Chicago, at the 2003 awards, that a musical took this coveted award again.

This day also marked the first and only tie in the Academy Awards’ Best Actress category – the award was shared by Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl.

Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore turns 72 today, country singer Loretta Lynn turns 85, actress Abigail Breslin turns 21 and Oscar-winner Adrian Brody turns 44.

Star of The Full Monty, Robert Carlyle, turns 56 today, while actress Julie Christie turns 76 today and actress Sarah Michelle Gellar turns 40.

Singer Percy Sledge died on this day in 2015. He was 73.
