Shane MacGowan, lead singer with The Pogues, died on this day in 2023, aged 65. He had spent most the year under intensive care after contracting viral encaphalitis. MacGowan is probably most remembered for his Fairytale of New York single, a big festive season chart success.
Actor Gael Garcia Bernal turns 47 today and director Ridley Scott, who made Gladiator and Thelma and Louise, celebrates his 88th birthday.
