Six years ago on this day, the acclaimed Peter Morgan play, The Audience, starring Helen Mirren (pictured), opened on Broadway. A chronicle of Queen Elizabeth II in imagined meetings with each of her Prime Ministers, the play saw Mirren take the Tony Award for her performance, as did Richard McCabe for his performance as Harold Wilson.
Celebrated South African playwright, novelist and actor Athol Fugard died in Stellenbosch on this day in 2025, aged 92. Born in 1932, he was acclaimed as “the greatest active playwright in the English-speaking world” by Time magazine in 1985. Fugard published more than 30 plays.
