This day in 1965 marked the release of The Sound of Music, one of the most popular movies of all time, starring Julie Andrews (pictured) and Christopher Plummer. It took the Best Picture Oscar in 1966.

At the Academy Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles on this day in 2025, Anora was named Best Picture. The film’s director, Sean Baker, won awards as co-producer, director, writer and editor. He tied with Walt Disney for the most Oscars won by a single person in the same year – with the unique distinction of Baker being the first person to receive all four Oscars for the same film.

In another Oscars first in 2025, Zoe Saldana took the statuette for best supporting actress for her role in Emilia Perez, becoming the first American of Dominican origin to win an Academy Award. Of note, too, is that the event was hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien for the first time.

12 Years a Slave took the Best Picture Oscar on this day in 2014, when Matthew McConaughey received the Best Actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club and Cate Blanchett took the Best Actress award for Blue Jasmine. Frozen took the Oscar for Best Animated Feature that year.

On this day in 1933, the original King Kong had its premiere at Radio City Music Hall in New York, while on this day in 1944, at the 16th Academy Awards ceremony, Casablanca took the Oscar for Best Picture.

Singer-actor Jon Bon Jovi turns 63 today,  James Bond Daniel Craig turns 57, and actor Chris Martin of Coldplay turns 48.

On this day in 1964, The Beatles started filming their hit movie, A Hard Day’s Night, and Roberta Flack took the statuette for Record of the Year, for Killing Me Softly, at the Grammy Awards, held on this day in 1974.

Too Shy by Kajagoogoo, a band led by Limahl, was crowning the British singles chart on this day in 1983. It spent two weeks topping the chart. Just saying…
