ON THIS DAY IN 2025:

Action star Chuck Norris (pictured) turns 85 today, country singer and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood turns 42 and singer Robin Thicke turns 51.

Actor Jon Hamm turns 54 today and Basic Instinct star Sharon Stone turns 67. Cindy Alter of hit South African band Clout turns 68 and Durban versatile musician Andy Turrell turns 44.

Playbill reports that on this day in 1953, a revival of the Gershwin musical Porgy and Bess started a 305-performance run at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York. It outlasted the 1935 original. The revival starred Irving Barnes, Urylee Leonardos and Cab Calloway.

In other theatre news, Sweet Bird of Youth, which opened on Broadway on this day in 1959, starred Geraldine Page as an ageing actress and Paul Newman as her paid escort. Directed by Elia Kazan, the Tennessee Williams play also featured Rip Torn, Diana Hyland and Sidney Blackmer.

This day in 1975 saw the Broadway debut of the British-produced musical The Rocky Horror Show, with Tim  Curry, Meat Loaf and Richard O’Brien, all of whom went on to star in the cult film version. The stage show ran for only 45 performances in New York.

On this day in 1988, I Think We’re Alone Now by Tiffany was enjoying the first of five weeks atop South Africa’s Springbok Radio chart. Just saying…
