It was on this day in 1979 that the glorious Stephen Sondheim classic, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, opened on Broadway, starring Angela Lansbury (pictured) and Len Cariou. The show swept the Tony Awards, taking prizes for best musical, lead actor and lead actress, director (Harold Prince), book, score and also scenic and costume design, reports Playbill.
Popular singer Eric Carmen died in his sleep on this day in 2024, aged 74. He was the lead singer with the The Raspberries and, as a solo performer, had hits with All By Myself and Hungry Eyes.
