The 78th Tony Awards, celebrating Broadway’s finest, took place on this day in 2025 at Radio City Music Hall in the Big Apple. It was hosted by Wicked star Cynthia Erivo. Maybe Happy Ending took six awards – including those for best new musical and for Darren Criss as best actor in a musical. Nicole Scherzinger took the Tony for best actress in a lead role, for the audacious Jamie Lloyd revival of Sunset Boulevard. Purpose was named as best new play.
It was on this day in 1925 that Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart marked their lyric and songwriting debut in The Garrick Gaieties, staged at Broadway’s Garrick Theatre. Playbill reports that production starred Sterling Holloway, Sanford Meisner and Romney Brent.
Playbill also reports that it was on this day in 2015 that Bombshell, the fictional musical from the television series Smash, was presented in a one-night-only concert to benefit The Actors’ Fund. The event reunited cast members from the series, including Debra Messing, Katharine McPhee and Will Chase.
